Abstract

This chapter explores the manner in which readers recognize and develop the fiction/non-fiction or literature/history dichotomy by analyzing the reception of Ottoman accounts of the Habsburg siege of the border castle of Nagykanizsa in 1601. It argues that the use of particular narrative strategies and the adherence to various protocols determine the non fictional status of a work.
