Catholic Religious Education: Lessons in Liberation?

Religious education in England is currently a 'hot topic' eliciting any number of opinions about its proper content, proper methodology, even its proper name. In this article the author takes seriously the proposal that approaches to the subject are possibly more important that its precise content and invites the reader into a thought experiment using 'Catholic' as a mnemonic for studies in cosmology, anthropology, transcendence, hermeneutics, orientalism, love, imagination and christology. The provocative conclusion is that rooted in the wisdom of Jesus Christ, Catholic RE is best understood as a sustained intellectual engagement in personal and social liberation.
