Counting difficulties for students with dyslexia

Many studies examine counting skills in young children with language-related disabilities but few studies have examined counting skills in older children with these disabilities. In this study I examined the counting skills of fifteen 9-10-year-old students with dyslexia. During an individual clinical interview students worked on an object counting task, counting by tens tasks, and word problems. Video analysis of these tasks revealed that twelve students made errors on the counting tasks and that these counting difficulties impacted the students’ abilities to complete the word problems accurately. Even in upper primary school students with dyslexia have difficulties with counting and these difficulties with counting impact their abilities to accurately solve more complex mathematical problems.
