Are there benefits to introducing children to famous and contemporary scientists?

The COVID-19 pandemic has put paid to planned research into the impact of the resource, Standing on the Shoulders of Giants (SOTSOG) (Sinclair, Strachan & Trew, 2019), which was due to take place in April. As a consequence, the following does not deliver a robust review, but instead general musings based on comments from those who trialled the resource and from informal conversations with others who have used it. The article first summarises the SOTSOG framework. It then details the potential benefits of using it as a way of integrating the study of scientists into the primary science curriculum, and finally makes suggestions for improvements alongside offering some food for thought. In particular, it focuses on the influence that learning about scientists may have on developing a child’s science capital.
