Reflecting on Social Class, Physical Education and Community Sport Scholarship: A Call to Action

Our edited collection has explored social class within physical education (PE) and community sport, addressing a gap amidst neoliberal pressures in higher education (HE). In this concluding chapter, we reflect on the personal and professional journeys shaping the book, acknowledging the challenging academic climate in the UK, marked by funding cuts and metric-driven cultures, and the impact on scholarship on social class in PE and community sport. Whilst we pride ourselves on the fact that our collection features eclectic theoretical contributions, we highlight the need for further intersectional analyses of social class vis-a-vis race, gender, disability, and sexuality, and the need for perspectives from the Global South. In this light, we conclude with a call to action by posing some potential future research directions which encourage collaborative, interdisciplinary work, tackling key questions regarding social class, power, governance, and inequalities in PE and community sport.
