The ethics of memory modification as a PTSD treatment

The purpose of this dissertation is to investigate the ethical challenges facing the use of memory modification techniques (MMTs) as PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) prevention and treatment. An explanation of PTSD will be provided and the potential opportunity for MMTs will be explained. Many ethical issues will then be looked into, many of which will turn to Mill’s harm principle for justification. After addressing a number of moral quandaries, a conclusion shall be drawn that the ethical costs of using MMTs for PTSD are too high and therefore unjustifiable.
