An Analysis of the Importance of Religious Education in a Catholic Primary School

This dissertation is written in the context of Religious Education in Catholic Education in the within the Diocese of Cardiff. The aim of this research project is to analyse how the role of achieving quality in the curriculum, with particular reference to Religious Education, can support and impact on the distinctive nature of a Catholic school and to assess why the religious formation of students is essential for school leaders. To develop this role, I will begin my research by carrying out a Literature Review of the relevant materials written about this field, followed by a small scale research project based within my present school. I will consider the leadership theories which support or challenge the pursuit of excellence in the curriculum in Religious Education so that it forms part of the distinctive nature of the Catholic school. The dissertation draws upon data produced by two stakeholder groups: the staff and pupils of a Catholic primary school. It explores the continuing relevance for Catholic school leaders in the development of Religious Education in the 21st Century. The dissertation concludes by making a number of recommendations for school leaders in promoting high quality learning and teaching, particularly in Religious Education, which fully supports the mission of a Catholic school.
