All together now: a study into an integrated approach to support inclusion in Catholic schools

This dissertation is written in the context of 21st century Catholic education within the Archdiocese of Cardiff. Whilst it is set in South Wales, I believe that the findings and recommendations reach to any Catholic primary school in the UK. The paper aims to explore how inclusion in Catholic primary schools can be improved and further developed, focusing specifically on the inclusion of children with special educational needs. Through a literature review I will explore the question of why Catholic school educators need to create more inclusive school environments, looking particularly at Catholic social teaching; followed by an investigation into what inclusive service delivery systems are available and how they could be provided. Included in this study will be a reflection of leadership styles relevant to supporting inclusion through leadership at all levels. A survey of four Catholic primary schools is presented and analysed in the context of the aim of the dissertation and the findings from the literature review. I will conclude this dissertation by proposing a description of what a truly inclusive school might look like and recommending strategies for school leaders, staff and governors as to how they might develop and sustain them. This will embolden Catholic schools to continue on their journey to build communities that uphold human dignity, and demonstrate a preferential option for the marginalised.
