Spiritual leadership and Chaplaincy Models of chaplaincy: a comparative study of alternative forms of spiritual leadership in the Catholic secondary schools of the Archdiocese of Cardiff

In this dissertation, issues relating to models of chaplaincy are researched and explored, in order to develop a deeper understanding of the links between chaplaincy and spiritual leadership in secondary schools. The study focuses on defining the terms ‘spirituality’ and ‘spiritual development’ and discussing models of leadership that are meaningful in developing the distinctive nature of our Catholic Schools. Various sources of literature have been reviewed and are referred to throughout the study. Quantative and qualitative research involving online surveys and face to face interviews support the conclusions and recommendations regarding three key questions : the need for chaplains in secondary schools; the most effective way to lead the spiritual life of the school community, and how the clergy can be helped to play their vital role in schools. In conclusion, recommendations for the school and diocese are suggested. Having identified good practice, the study confirms the need for this essential focus in the life of a Catholic Secondary school. For our schools to be truly Christ centred and distinctive in nature, they must have spiritual leadership of the highest quality. This comes when Head teacher, chaplain and clergy are effective minsters and leaders to the school community they serve.
