Facing the future with confidence: an evaluation of the distinctive nature of the curriculum in Catholic primary schools

In this dissertation a number of issues relating to the distinctive nature of the curriculum in Catholic primary schools will be examined. The aim of this research project is to explore the purpose and notion of what the Catholic curriculum is. This study will further investigate and analyse the significance of how school leadership, with a particular focus on the sacramental perspective, as well as mission integrity, can support, develop and enhance the curriculum whilst considering the challenges ahead. I will begin my research by conducting a review of the literature available for this subject matter and then a small scale research project will be completed. The methodology I will employ will include semi-structured interviews of headteachers from six local Catholic primary schools as well as questionnaires for the teaching staff of those schools as well as my own school. By engaging these two groups I will be able to gauge their views on the purpose and distinctiveness of Catholic education and the curriculum. The results will then be compared, analysed and evaluated with reference to the literature review. Finally, the evidence collected from this investigation indicates that there is a need to ensure that school leaders prioritise the notion of the Catholic curriculum and articulate this clearly to all stakeholders as well as continuing to shape a Christ centred model of school leadership.
