Serving the poor: the extent to which the Social Action Movement in a secondary school in Jaffna contributes to the empowerment of the poor and marginalised.

The purpose of this dissertation is not only to explore the extent to which the Social Action Movement in a Secondary school in Jaffna contributes to the empowerment of the poor and the marginalised but also to analyse how its activities could be enhanced in the future. From the point of view of the Bible, Vatican and Post Vatican documents along with some Christian writings, it is clear that the Catholic schools must give a preferential option for the poor. In order to find out the real state of affairs, the data collection method of questionnaires and interviews were administered to the parents and the teachers in the case study school which were then classified, compared and interpreted in the light of the literature sources. Thus it has been found out that the Social Action Movement is extending its activities to the betterment of the poor and the marginalised in the case study school. But at the same time it must expand its scope in the future with regard to its members, beneficiaries, funds and activities and serve the poor with the collaboration of leaders with the vision of sacramental perspective of leadership which must be based on the servant leadership model of Jesus.
