Abstract

The chapter "Pluralism and the Common Good in a Market Economy" examines how a free economy involves free human interaction in which people can choose the good (or otherwise). The chapter than focuses on education and the importance of parental autonomy and school choice as a mechanism to reconcile conflict in a pluralistic society as well as for ensuring the best quality education for children. This is contrasted with views that promote the abolition of faith schools coupled with a desire to impose upon all parents a particular form of secular education. Such approaches, it is argued, are incompatible with freedom of conscience.
