The microbiome and mental health

This talk discusses our rapidly expanding knowledge of the microbiome and its involvement in the gut-brain axis. It begins by describing important animal research which has spurred an interest in the therapeutic possibilities of human microbiome manipulations. Key studies will be considered, looking at the impact of microbiome manipulations on mental-health, with a focus on some of the difficulties conducting this research. Dr Lawrence’s current research project - exploring a dietary intervention in ADHD - will be discussed. The talk will finish with a consideration of evidence-based ways to manipulate your microbiome and potentially improve your mental health.
